"In preparation for the stomach for an oncoming pleasure" was already known in ancient times with the Egyptians a mixture of bitter substances, plants and herbs served before the meal.
In ancient times, people appreciated the conservation of herbs in alcohol and their beneficial effects. The first prescriptions of the so-called “Magenbitters“ – or bitters for the stomach originate as early as the year 1050 AD. At the beginning of the 19th century alcoholic bitter drinks experienced a renaissance. The soothing concoctions were prepared as highly concentrated elixirs and then diluted before consumption.
